Factors that affect how much your phone is worth:

Original price

This is the most obvious place to begin. How much was your phone worth when you first bought it? Depending on the age and condition of the device, you could expect to recieve anything from 70% to 5% of its original price.

Age of model

How long has it been since the phone was originally released? Phone technology upgrades a lot every single year. Older phones will lack key features, and so they’ll always be worth less. Older phones are also more likely to become unsupported by software updates. The longer since your phone was first released, the less money it is worth.

Condition

This is the big one. If your phone is in perfect condition, with not a single scratch on it, then it’s worth a lot more money than a phone that is noticably scratched up. That said, you can nearly always get paid some small amount for your old phone, even if it’s faulty. To find out more, visit our sell my broken phone page.

Brand

Popular phones from trusted brands, like Apple or Samsung, usually hold their value longer. When people buy budget handsets, they’re more likely to buy an up-to-date model. But when people are looking to buy a flagship Apple phone on a budget, they’ll usually consider an iPhone that has been around for a couple of years already.

Features that Matter

Some features can make or break a phone’s resale value. For example, an older phone with no 5G capabilities will have lost its value much faster than a similarly priced 5G phone from the same year.

When’s the Best Time to Sell?

Phones lose value over time, so don’t wait too long if you’re looking to upgrade. As a rule of thumb, you get the best offers for your old phone just before a new model is released. When a new iPhone is released in September, the resale value of previous iPhones drops significantly. If you have an old iPhone to sell, make sure you trade in before September.
