The new Samsung Galaxy S9 is now shipping to customers. So is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it?
The new Samsung Galaxy S9 has finally been released, today people will start to get their orders and their brand new phones. The Galaxy S9 range is Samsung’s new flagships, offering the best features, new chipset and a new camera. This year is different though, there’s not much different at all, if you put a galaxy s8 and s9 together, you would fail to spot the difference. Is it worth spending a fair whack of money on the new Samsung Galaxy S9? Read below for a quick and simplified round-up on the question: Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it?!
The design of the Galaxy s9 is pretty much the same as the Galaxy s8 apart from the new purple colour, there’s nothing wrong with the galaxy s8’s design; in fact, it was the best looking phone of 2017 so it’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy S9 is obviously just refining that design that the Galaxy s8 made famous, the only real design difference is the moving of the fingerprint scanner (finally!).
The fingerprint sensor is now under the camera, rather than next to it, meaning it is easier to reach and it’s less likely you’ll smudge the camera! Other than this change, and hiding the IR blaster at the top of the screen, there’s not much to shout about.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it? If you’re not bothered about the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S8 then the S8 is a better choice for the price.
The screens on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are unsurprisingly the same size as the Galaxy S8 range (5.8 inches and 6.2 inches, respectively). The display resolution is also the same across the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S8 series, the screen resolutions are 2960×1440, the screen is also still the same AMOLED panel as last year so there is no upgrade really apart from colour accuracy increases which do make the screen a tad better than the Galaxy S8 ranges. This isn’t a bad thing though, the AMOLED panels from Samsung are the best in the business, there’s no beating them.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it? If you own a Galaxy S8, you have the same screen as a Galaxy S9, no point in upgrading if this is the key feature you want in a phone.
Without nerding out, with the specs for the new Exynos chipset compared to last, the new chipset offers a 30% speed increase over last year’s chipset. The new chipset also handles games better; helps give the device a longer battery life, 4K video capture and playback at 120fps and the ability to have a data connection speed of a massive 200Mbps! There’s no denying that this chipset is better, it handles gaming better with even less chance of freezing or ‘lag’ and helps run them buttery smooth. The real question is if someone who uses it normally will see a massive difference?
You can feel a difference a tad, it is a bit quicker in the menus, switching and is smoother when loading things but not enough to warrant buying this phone on that alone! If speed, gaming and shooting 4K videos at 60fps is not a major factor for you then you won’t really need the new chipset.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it? If gaming or video recording is a factor for you then the Galaxy S9 is worth it, it also offers better battery life and speeds close to the iPhone X!
The camera is the main selling point for Samsung; it has been the main advertising for the Galaxy S9 range. The normal Galaxy S9 has a 12 Megapixel camera with a variable lens which can change from f/1.5 (great for low light) and f/2.4 (better for well-lit scenes). The camera itself hasn’t had a major upgrade but the variable lens offers it something no other phone does, it definitely improves your images in different scenarios.
The f/1.5 lens captures jaw-dropping images in low light, besting the Google Pixel 2; the f/2.4 lens is not a major upgrade in quality over the Galaxy S8, especially in auto mode. The camera quality is still breathtaking but in low light, some of the photos seem washed out and colourless at times. The auto HDR mode seems to have gotten a little boost; its less ‘orangey’ and the colours are vivid but not oversaturated (for once!). The S9+ features the same 12-Megapixel camera with a second 12-megapixel telephoto camera (same as the Galaxy Note 8’s); the telephoto camera is great and still features the live focus mode!
The camera app on the Galaxy S9 is now different; it very closely looks like the iPhones iOS camera app but with the inclusion of advanced settings. There is still not a dedicated recording tab/mode so it’s still on the same page as the camera; this is disappointing but not a deal breaker!
Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it? The Samsung Galaxy S9 camera is an upgrade over the Galaxy S8 for sure if you’re into photography.
I had to add sound in due to the Samsung Galaxy S9 finally getting stereo speakers! The Samsung Stereo speakers are tuned by AKG and sound brilliant, while not as good as the iPhone X or the Google Pixel 2 XL, they are a lot better than the sound quality on the Galaxy S8. If you watch a lot of media and videos, the speakers will shine and you will definitely enjoy the sound.
Is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it? The Galaxy S9 features stereo speakers so it is definitely better than the S8
The Samsung Galaxy S9 does feature its own version of Animoji (AR Emoji); it’s not great but is a feature on the new phone. It’s nowhere near as good as Animoji for the facial tracking or accuracy but it does allow some customisation and gives you GIFs you can send to your friends! It does allow you to have more personalisation with this and it does look a bit like you after the scan(ish), it is good if you and your friends like to send things to each other regularly, it does wear off after a while though.
Conclusion – Depends if something like this appeals to you.
To conclude, is the Samsung Galaxy S9 worth it? I will let you read the points and make your own opinion, everyone has different opinions and money available for a new phone. In my opinion, I think the Galaxy S8 is a great shout, especially now it’s cheaper but the Samsung Galaxy S9 is great if you have the money!
