Instagram has now unveiled a new feature called ‘Type Mode’

In a bid to retain more users, Instagram has created a new feature called ‘Type Mode’. This new feature allows you to post a story on Instagram using only words instead of pictures or selfies.

“Turn your most random thoughts into something colourful and expressive” Instagram

The new update features a lot more than just text in a dull manner! It allows you to use creative styles of text and colourful backgrounds to express yourself. It means that stories are no longer dependant on photos or videos because they’re not required to use this mode. You can choose from many different styles of text including neon and even typewriter text.

It’s a great way to share whats on your mind without having to take a photo, best for when you’re feeling rough and not camera happy. It does look like it adds a new twist to stories, maybe even a new way to become an influencer. However, not everyone likes the new mode as Instagram is loved for being an app where you don’t need to read anything, just indulge in images, photography and videos. It may feel that it’s taking a step backwards, and missing the point. It does seem Facebook wants to put all of its features on Instagram… *Cough last active time*

It works the same as the other stories, a feature that Instagram copied off Snapchat  created, which allows you to post something to your ‘Story’ which will stay there and is viewable for twenty-four hours.

Instagram’s blog: “Today, we’re introducing “Type” mode in stories, a new way to share anything that’s on your mind with creative text styles and backgrounds — no photo or video required. Now, you can turn your most random thoughts into something colourful and expressive. When you open the camera, you’ll see “Type” next to “Normal” under the record button. Tap “Type” and write whatever comes to mind — your favourite lyrics, a silly thought or a random idea — and play with different styles to change the look and feel. Then, you can pick different background colours, highlight words and phrases or add a background photo.”

The new mode does look fun and will probably become a hit with the younger audience. However, many people love that Instagram isn’t about text and would instead go on Facebook or Twitter to see this.

Personally, I like it! I just hope that it isn’t over-used.

The new feature will be available in an update rolling out now, and it will be version 30 of the app.
