Google tracks you, regardless of your settings

Reports show that Google tracks you, even if you turn off your location settings.

Update: Google has updated it’s support page to now say the following: “This setting does not affect other location services on your device.”

Google’s claims that you can turn off any location tracking on your phone is completely untrue, Google tracks you regardless. The Associated Press did some research into their claims and found that users are still being tracked, even with all of their settings off.

Google takes a snapshot of your location whenever you open Google Maps or the Weather app on Android phones. What makes matters worse is that on Googles official support page, it states: “With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored.”

It doesn’t matter whether you are using an Android phone or an iPhone, Google tracks you, it will still store your location data, even if you have turned on all of the privacy settings (which should prevent Google from doing so).

“With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored.”

To stop Google storing all of your location data, you need to turn off Location History and Web and App Activity settings on your phone or device. You also need to go to myactivity.google.com and delete all of your location spots.

Google responds

Google have responded to the controversial findings –

“There are a number of different ways that Google may use location to improve people’s experience, including Location History, Web and App Activity, and through device-level Location Services,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement to the AP. “We provide clear descriptions of these tools, and robust controls so people can turn them on or off, and delete their histories at any time.”
